LOW-INPUT SUSTAINABILITY

Eco-sensitive Management Principles
All landscapes are designed to become virtually self-sustaining with decreased inputs over time. The following are strategies for doing so.

  • Use "Best Management Practices". Treat the landscape as a collection of individuals, not only as a whole
  • Minimize fertility inputs
  • Use slow-release fertilizer for long term fertility
  • Avoid fertilizers high in nitrogen (water-soluble fertilizers, over-use of municipal biosolids)
  • Strive for plants to have a "healthy stress level"
  • Establishment of IPM-based programs
